Growing Up As Neelabh
May 26, 2008The first name that was given to me was Harshwardhan. This name was give to me by my grandfather. But later on other relatives started suggesting some other easy names for me. Well, that included some real nice names like Mukesh, Jitender, Ravi etc. Finally they organised a round table conference and my grandfather’s only brother in law, who is very close to my grandfather suggested this name. Neelabh. All my family members liked it a lot.
There were many reasonse for liking this name. First and the foremost was the it was quite an unique name. I don’t understand why someone loves to chose unique names for their babies. And if they want their child’s names to be unique, what could be more unique to R1D1 or say Catzuphasy? Well, lets return to my naming conference. They passed the name Neelabh. Now, one thing missed in this all melee was that they never asked me if I like my name or not.
When I first went to school, on the very first day my class teacher asked me what does my name mean? I was totally clueless. I asked my grandmother that what does it mean.
Neelabh word is made of two words. Neel and abha. Its an adjective. Anything which emits blue light or has a tinge of it is called Neelabh. And its other name for lord Shiva and our good old sky.
Then started the real problem. Very seldom I was called Neelabh. Usually my peers used to call me Neelam, Neelap, Milap and such stupid variations of the real name. But it hardly mattered to me as I was deeply in love with my name. So whenever, mispronounced or misspelled my name, I would correct them without bothering for too much.
Why is it so that most of my posts ended disruptly and are about me. Am I self obsessed?

Neelabh is nice. I always hated my name since I can remember. The hate was not because my name is too tiny or abrupt or whatever…it is because it was just kept to rhyme with my elder sister’s name!.
Its only now Im coming to terms with liking my name.
PS: Its worse when your name is misspelt most of the time!
@ Full of Life.
I might have hated my name if it was ‘Full of Life’
Enjoy what you have and what you will get
I like ur name too!
And no, u r not self-obsessed… u write abt urself ‘coz it’s ur life u r concerned abt… not Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s!
And we read ur blog, ‘coz we like to know whts going on in YOUR life.
And even if u r self-obsessed, why do u care? What diff does it make to u, hahhh!

@Kaddu

Ur name rhymes wid julaab and thats one thing i like about it!!
@Pramod
thats the alternate thinking. Need some tinidazole with cloaxacillin????
Same boat, ol’ buddy. Same boat.
@Neela
I understand
Its a unique name indeed. When I got to know it for the first time, I think that was the first time I heard this name but I could make the meaning.
And I don’t think you are self obessed. Its your blog after all and if you won’t write what you feel about certain thing (it could be anything including yourself too) then it doesnt hold much meaning…..
This was awesome
There is nothingworng about having unique names….after all isn’t it great that yiu start your life with something unique in over a 1billion people?? My children’s name are very unique and difficult to pronounce as well..but thats what it is…it sounds even more unique in England but let it be…
there is nothing in a name….its the person who makes that name unique…no body gives a feck about your name if you have made your way to the top!
cheers!
@ Abhinav

Hello there,
It’s a nice little post..good to read it. My name got changed from Neelabh to Nilabh when I was kid, probably because my parents wanted it pronounced like that or numerology or whatever. Growing up I thought why not have the original spelling back, but now I’ve kind of started liking this name. However, it took me way too much time to do so. I had the exact same troubles explaining my name to people and the meaning and stuff that you mentioned, ’cause of which I was mostly introvert and stage shy & I kind of blame my name for it.
Your post is an eye opener for me. Thanks v much
